Acid and alkali waste gas

How It Works

For effective Acid and Alkali Waste Gas Treatment, pollutants are divided into two main groups: acidic gases such as SO₂, HCl, H₂S, HF, and acid aerosols, and alkaline gases such as ammonia, amines, and other basic vapours. Because each requires different neutralisation mechanisms, AQUIPTEC designs multi-stage systems combining chemical absorption and adsorption for maximum efficiency.

1- Waste Gas Collection
Emissions are captured at the source from tanks, process units, or covered sewage systems and conveyed through corrosion-resistant ducting to the treatment system.

2- Acid Wash Tower
This stage removes alkaline gases such as ammonia and amines by absorbing and neutralising vapours, controlling odour and nitrogen compounds, using oxidising or acidic solutions such as sodium hypochlorite, and removing particulates and soluble contaminants.

3- Alkali Wash Tower
The gas then enters the alkali wash tower, where acidic gases are neutralised using sodium hydroxide (NaOH), lime or limestone slurry, or other alkaline chemicals. Acid gases are converted into stable salts, reducing corrosion and protecting downstream equipment.

4- Activated Carbon Adsorption
An activated carbon polishing stage removes residual odours, VOCs, trace pollutants, and remaining harmful compounds, ensuring compliance with strict emission limits.

5- Clean Gas Discharge
Purified gas is safely discharged through a stack once environmental standards are met.

6- Effluent Treatment and Recycling
Spent scrubbing liquids are neutralised, treated, and recycled to reduce chemical use, wastewater discharge, and operating costs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Acid and Alkali Waste Gas Treatment?

Acid and Alkali Waste Gas Treatment is a process used to remove corrosive and toxic emissions such as sulfur dioxide, hydrochloric acid, ammonia, and amines from industrial exhaust streams. It typically uses chemical scrubbers, neutralisation, and adsorption technologies to ensure environmental compliance and workplace safety.

Industries such as chemical processing, electroplating, semiconductor manufacturing, wastewater treatment, fertiliser production, pharmaceuticals, and metal refining commonly require Acid and Alkali Waste Gas Treatment to control emissions and meet environmental regulations

Chemical scrubbers use a liquid solution to absorb and neutralise pollutants. Acidic gases are treated with alkaline solutions such as sodium hydroxide or lime, while alkaline gases like ammonia are removed using acidic or oxidising solutions. This process converts harmful gases into stable compounds.

Multi-stage systems provide higher removal efficiency, better odour control, improved corrosion protection, and compliance with strict emission limits. Combining acid washing, alkali washing, and activated carbon adsorption ensures reliable and long-term performance.

The best system depends on gas composition, flow rate, temperature, and regulatory requirements. AQUIPTEC provides customised solutions based on process analysis, pilot testing, and detailed engineering to ensure optimal performance and cost-effective operation.
